During the 2007 campaign for Mississippi attorney general, Republican Al Hopkins hammered incumbent Jim Hood for his hiring of private attorneys to file lawsuits for the state. Hood, a Democrat, defeated Hopkins in the November general election. But the private attorney issue remains alive. The state Senate on Friday passed a bill that would require the attorney general to go through a public review process before hiring private attorneys. The measure still faces scrutiny in the House, which has defeated similar bills in the past.
