State senators wrangled Wednesday with Attorney General Darrell McGraw over his office’s practice of entering into lawsuit settlements that specify how the settlement dollars must be spent — a practice the senators said usurps the Legislature’s authority to appropriate state funds. During Wednesday’s budget presentation to the Senate Finance Committee, McGraw defended the practice — and said the criticism of his office stems from corporate interests who don’t like being held accountable in consumer and antitrust suits.
“When you sue people, would you believe, they don’t like it,” McGraw said. “Then, when you take money from them, they like it even less.”
