Bar wants Scruggs' law license stripped

Lawyer Dickie Scruggs took up his famed fight with Big Tobacco and won millions for himself and the state of Mississippi. Now he's fighting just to keep his law license. The Mississippi Bar is asking the state Supreme Court to strip Scruggs of his law license because he's pleaded guilty in a judicial bribery scheme. But Scruggs' lawyers, Michael Martz and Charles Mikhail, are saying not so fast. They say the complaint filed by the bar "is fatally defective" because no certified copy of conviction is attached, as required by rules. Adam Kilgore, general counsel for the bar, called the argument by Martz - Kilgore's predecessor - "rather strained. While Mr. Scruggs' guilty plea may not as of yet resulted in entry of a final judgment by the federal district court, the formal complaint is not fatally flawed." Kilgore asked the high court to deny the dismissal and to immediately suspend Scruggs from the practice of law.
