Lawmakers try to rein in McGraw

STATE attorney general, Darrell McGraw has used his office to sue companies. He contracts the work to private lawyers who may pocket a third of any award. Many of these companies deserve to be sued. But instead of having the Legislature appropriate the winnings, the attorney general has been doing so. This has allowed McGraw to spend millions without oversight by anyone, including the Legislature, which is supposed to appropriate public money.

But things are changing. Lawmakers approved Gov. Joe Manchin's proposal to make sure legislative leaders, the governor and a cabinet secretary are in the loop whenever a settlement reaches $250,000 or more. This is a good first step.
